Sometimes we need a change of pace. The following is for Advaita folk who feel they may be stuck or not making much progress. It is a 180 degrees change of pace from pure self-inquiry of abiding in the I Am style of meditation, to pure Bhakti, by reading "The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna."

Ramakrishna fully understood the absolute, experienced it, but ultimately rejected it. He wanted to always feel the richness of his love for Kali and Kali for him.

Below is a book link, and also tabs for an audio file of the book. Try a break from formless meditation for a month or two.

  1. Thanks Guru,
I will give this a read. Self inquiring/abiding has shattered my world/identity into an endless dream/life that goes on and on like some vast automatronic intelligence, forever self perpetuating, fueled by an infinite supply of emptiness. The ride is fun...for awhile, sad, funny, pretty ridiculous but ultimately meaningless, empty.

Love is the saving grace, at least for me it is. Love is everything, or makes anything worthwhile. The absolute will always be there. Love for me is the World Soul, the Universal Soul, or Eternal Soul. The total fusion of billions of woven dreams and fabricated realities, I know it doesn't exist.

  2. I would say that it is inaccurate to say, as you do above, that Ramakrishna ultimately rejected the knowledge of the absolute. His life is a testament to the validity and unity of all paths.
    A little quote:
"The yogi seeks to realize the Paramatman, the Supreme Soul. His ideal is the union of the embodied soul and the Supreme Soul. He withdraws his mind from sense objects and tries to concentrate on the Paramatman. Therefore, during the first stage of his spiritual discipline, he retires into solitude and with undivided attention practices meditation in a fixed posture.
But the reality is one and the same; the difference is only in name. He who is Brahman is verily Atman, and again, He is the Bhagavan. He is Brahman to the followers of the path of knowledge, Paramatman to the yogis, and Bhagavan to the lovers of God. "
If formless meditation isn't working for you then try something else. Why not abide in Devotion and Knowledge of the absolute. The reality is one and the same. Division is illusion. -Greg
